I can’t think of any reason that someone that’s been charged with a crime wouldn’t at least speak to a lawyer. Whether or not they ultimately hire that lawyer or apply for the services of a public defender, the collateral consequences of a criminal conviction can be life long. You might be kept from getting the job that you want to get, going to the school that you want to go to, entering the career that you want to enter, living in the place that you want to live. An experienced attorney can help you explore defenses, explore sentencing alternatives other than incarceration or conviction. It just makes sense, no matter how seemingly minimal the charge, to at least speak to a criminal defense attorney.
I hope this addressed your question. Over the course of 25 years, I’ve found that fully addressing a legal question is best handled in a one-on-one, in person strategy and case analysis conference. I offer these to potential clients on a complimentary basis. Please use any of the methods under the contact tab at the top of the page to arrange yours.
