There are two types of permanent disability recognized under Baltimore’s worker compensation law. There’s permanent partial disability, and there’s permanent and total disability. Dealing with the second one first, permanent and total disability is akin to Social Security Disability where an individual is injured to an extent that there is essentially no job in the national economy that they could do and they’re unable to return to work. Permanent partial disability is the loss of use or the loss of function of one or more body parts so that the individual has a permanent impairment to that part of their body. Maryland law recognizes monetary compensation for that loss of use.
